I. First Field Trip: Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios
a. Friday, October 28, 2011 (Teacher Work Day) from 4am-midnight
b. Cost: $120 includes park admission, bus expense, and unlimited lunch, dinner, and beverages.
c. Money is due no later than October 14th. Payment is requested in cash because we have little time to wait for checks to clear. You will receive a receipt upon payment.
d. NOTE: The Media Center will be closed due to testing from October 13-20!! We will have a table set up by the Treasurer’s window near the main office on Friday, October 14th if you would like to pay that day. It’s also possible that you will be able to come in the morning before school through the back door to pay.
e. We can take a maximum of 43 students, but we need a minimum of 35.
f. Bring completed field trip form and payment in cash as soon as possible!
II. First Book: Rot and Ruin by Jonathan Mayberry
a. In a post-apocalyptic world where fences and border patrols guard the few people left from the zombies that have overtaken civilization, fifteen-year-old Benny Imura is finally convinced that he must follow in his older brother's footsteps and become a bounty hunter.
b. A few copies are left!
c. Book discussion on Oct. 31, 2011—potluck meeting (which means bring a snack to share!)
III. Community Service: Operation Paperback
a. Book drive for members of the military stationed abroad
i. Update from Annie Mesa
1. Great progress on banners and covering boxes.
2. We need to spread the word!
3. Contribute books for community service: 3 books=1 hour
IV. Community Service: http://www.knit-a-square.com/
a. knit 8” squares (which will be sewn into blankets) for AIDS orphans in South Africa (South Africa has over 1.4 million AIDS orphans)
b. Each square will go into a blanket to keep a child warm; 40 squares are needed to make a blanket
c. If you have knitting experience, great! If you don’t, you can learn.
i. You will need a skein of worsted weight 8-ply yarn and size 4 knitting needles
d. Lilibeth Ramos is spearheading this project.
